
KENYA COMMITS TO CURB MARINE PLASTIC POLLUTION

PS Environment and Forestry Ali Noor Ismail, when he led a team of Ministry officials during the Commonwealth Clean Oceans Ministerial breakfast meeting at a Nairobi hote.
Kenya has put in place all necessary measures to curb extensive marine plastic pollution, Environment and Forestry CS Keriako Tobiko has said.
At the same time the CS committed the country to join and support clean oceans alliance that was initiated by the Common Wealth Countries.
In a speech read on his behalf by Mr. Ali Noor Isamail, the Principal Secretary in his ministry, the CS enumerated ban on plastic carrier bags, producer responsibility and take back scheme as some of the government initiatives to reduce marine plastic pollution.
Other measures include decommissioning of the giant Kibaarani dumpsite in Mombasa and the establishment of the Kenya Coast Guard Services.
The CS was addressing a common wealth clean oceans Ministerial breakfast meeting that was chaired by the United Kingdom Minister of state for Common Wealth Lord Ahmad and attended by British High Commissioner to Kenya Nic Hailey.
CS Tobiko emphasized that Kenya took cognizance of the threat to sustainable development and was focusing on illegal, unregulated fishing, maritime security, climate change and alien invasive species among others land based sources of pollution.
