
MINISTRY LAUDS JICA FOR SUPPORT.
The Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Dr. Ibrahim Mohamed, has expressed the Ministry appreciation to the Government of Japan for its continued financial support to the Kenya Government in the field of forestry development, through the Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA), observing that, JICA, has over the year’s provided technical cooperation for KEFRI and KFS on promoting social forestry, research and development on tree planting in Arid and Semi Arid Lands (ASALs), including breeding for drought tolerant varieties.
Speaking in his office when he received a team from JICA-Kenya office, the PS lauded JICA’s support to the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) through research, training and capacity building, noting that, the constitution of Kenya 2010 and vision 2030 requires the country to work towards achieving a forest cover of at least 10 percent of the land area.
The team, that was led by Mr. Keiichi Takahata, the chief advisor, Capacity Development Project for Sustainable Forest Management (CADEP-SFM), a project being implemented by the Ministry through the support of JICA, that aims at strengthening capacity at the national and county level on sustainable forest management briefed the PS on the project implementation progress.
The five year project has five components of policy support, pilot implementation, REDD+ readiness, tree breeding and regional cooperation.
