In collaboration with the Siaya County Government and other partners, the National Environment Trust Fund (NETFUND), has launched a tree growing campaign, that aims to increase the Siaya County forest cover, which at 0.41 percent, is the lowest in the Country. The tree planting and growing campaign, is in line with the Presidents clarion call for Kenyans to rally together to achieve the goal of 10 percent forest cover by 2022, considering the pivotal role forests play in realization of the big four agendas.
The campaign, that was launched at Maranda Boys High School by the chair of NETFUND Board of management, Hon. Moses Akaranga, saw over 2,000 trees planted. The programme aims to compliment the Ministry of Environment & Forestry goal, of planting and growing over 250 million trees by 2022, an initiative which is part of the Governments strategy aimed at increasing Kenya’s forest cover, protecting and conserving habitats and curbing the vagaries of climate change.
Siaya County Commissioner Mr. Michael Tialal, Siaya County Environment and Water Minister, Eng. Adrian Ouma, and NETFUND CEO, Mr. Samson Toniok, among other senior national and county officials, attended the ceremony.
