USE INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE TO PROTECT NATURAL RESOURCES-CS TOBIKO

Ministry of Environment and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko has underscored the need for inclusion of indigenous people’s knowledge in the conservation and protection of natural resources.

Mr. Tobiko said indigenous people have vital knowledge and stands equal to science in their roles, emphasizing that they play a meaningful and essential role in protection of the environment.

“Indigenous communities’ knowledge on forests and other vital natural resources are helpful in conservation of the environment by protecting the forests, shrines and holy places” said the CS.

The CS spoke at the One Planet Summit held at the sidelines of Fourth United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA 4).

A group of indigenous council of elders from Kikuyu led by Peter Munga, KAYA led by Kibabu Mohamed, Maasai led by Snr. Chief Rtd. Stephen ole Nkaru, HSC, Ogiek led by John Lobolo, Luo led by Prof. Ayiecho Olwenyi, Njuruncheke led by Lino Katheera, Mau led by Kelena Ole Nchoe represented their communities at the summit.
