Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, CS Dr. Deborah Mlongo Barasa has called on Kenya Forestry Research Institute(KEFRI) to deepen their contribution to national climate action through science-led innovations and inclusive community engagement.

Speaking during her visit to the KEFRI headquarters in Muguga, Dr. Barasa commended the institution’s long-standing commitment to forestry research, which she noted is critical to achieving Kenya’s environmental and development goals. “KEFRI remains at the heart of our efforts to build resilient landscapes, restore degraded ecosystems, and safeguard biodiversity. The future of our forests depends on the work being done here,” she stated.

Highlighting priority areas, the CS emphasized the importance of strengthening research and innovation to support the national 15 Billion Tree Growing Programme, which targets increasing tree cover to 30% by 2032. KEFRI plays a central role in this initiative through the production of quality tree seeds and seedlings. To date, 18 modern seed processing units have been established with support from the Ministry.

The CS applauded KEFRI’s leadership in dryland restoration, especially its propagation of drought-tolerant tree species such as Melia volkensii and Acacia tortilis. She also recognized ongoing efforts in managing invasive species and forest pests and progress in bamboo development to support Kenya’s green economy and sustainable livelihoods.

Beyond scientific research, the CS stressed the critical role of community involvement in forest conservation. She called on KEFRI to enhance its outreach and capacity-building efforts, ensuring that local communities become proactive stewards of their environment. “Let us ensure that every solution we develop is scalable, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of the people on the frontlines of climate change,” she urged.

She also reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to research-informed policy and called for stronger partnerships between KEFRI, international institutions, development partners, and non-state actors to maximize impact.

Dr. Barasa was accompanied by the PS for Forestry, Mr. Gitonga Mugambi, KEFRI Board Chairperson, Gen. (Rtd). Samson Mwathethe, KEFRI CEO/ Director, Dr. Jane Njuguna. She concluded her visit with a symbolic tree planting exercise and a meeting with staff at the KEFRI Auditorium, where she expressed gratitude for their continued dedication to environmental stewardship.

Other senior officials present included Forestry Development Secretary, Mr. George Tarus, Secretary of Administration Mr. Evans Mutari, and Ms. Susan Boit, Coordinator of the 15 Billion Tree Secretariat, among others from both the Ministry and KEFRI.
