10TH BAMBOO DAY MARKED IN BUSIA

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry is working on modalities to bring down the cost of seedlings for ease of reach by Kenyans, in a bid to surpass the ten percent National tree cover by 2022.
Speaking during the 10th International Bamboo day celebrations at the Busia Agricultural Training Center, Busia County, the Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry, Hon. Mohamed Elmi, who represented the Cabinet Secretary, Mr. Keriako Tobiko said that, the Kenya Forestry Research Institute and the Kenya Forestry Service, were undertaking sensitization programs to create demand for bamboo seedlings, noting that, in collaboration with other stakeholders, the Ministry will push for the lowering of the cost of producing the seedlings.
Noting that illegal activities like charcoal burning, degradation and tree felling were problems hampering efforts to increase tree cover in the western region, and the Country at large, Hon. Elmi noted that, the Ministry and its semi-autonomous agencies were working with other stakeholders to overcome such, together with other numerous challenges facing the Environment sector.
Busia Governor, H.E. Hon. Sospeter Ojamong, while speaking at the same function, observed that, over 700 farmers in his County had been enlisted in the National bamboo value chain program aimed at popularizing the wood plant, and lauded the Ministry in its endeavor in coming up with a bamboo policy that would ensure the sustainable planting of the Bamboo.
The 10th International Bamboo day, was marked under the theme”Harnessing Bamboo Potential for Climate Resilience Communities and Green Businesses’’.
