GOVERNMENT TO BOOST LVEMP.

The government will invest more resources in Lake Victoria Environmental Management Programme (LVEMP), to strengthen its capacity in environmental restoration of the lake basin.

The Principal Secretary for Environment and Forestry Ms Betty Maina has said that the government will forge for more development partners to participate in restoration of environmental status of Lake Victoria, saying the lake basin plays a critical role in the social economic activities for residents in the region.

The PS was speaking today in her office, when she received a team of World Bank officials who paid he a courtesy call, the team was on a mission to acquaint themselves with various programs under the Ministry.

The officials led by Mr. Ian G. Shukar, head of East Africa, Environment and Natural Resources. Shukar disclosed that the Lake Victoria Environmental Program (LVEMP) will be restructured from regional to national status in order to attract new funding.

Phase two of the program came to an end recently, LVEMP largely funded by the World bank among other development partners, and the government is sourcing for fresh funding.

The newly restructured LVEMP will serve more national than regional interests , it will have emphasis on climate change and forestry conservation.

During the meeting it was revealed that the LVEMP project will focus on the nationally determined contributions in reducing carbon emissions and landscape restoration.

Present during the meeting was, Ministry of Environment Director of Programs , Projects and Strategic Initiatives, Ms Agnes Yobterick, the Head of Conservation Directorate Alfred Gichu and Dr. Charles Mutai, Director of Climate Change.
