Ministry of Environment and Forestry Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS), Hon. Mohamed Elmi has said that the impacts of climate change are becoming more pronounced in developing countries with extreme weather events, posing climate related risks to natural and human systems.
Elmi was speaking today in Nairobi during the official opening of the Global Gender Workshop on planning the implementation of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), at the Safari Park Hotel.
CAS Elmi said that the underdeveloped vulnerable systems in developing countries easily succumb to these increasing frequencies and intensities of extreme weather events, causing loss of lives and livelihoods.
He called on world leaders to refocus their resources in addressing climate induced emergencies such as drought, floods and cyclones instead of prioritizing development needs such as building of roads, schools, hospitals or providing its citizens with water and electricity.
The CAS said that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report of 2018 indicates that biodiversity, ecosystems, health, livelihoods, food security, water supply, human security, and economic growth are at risk due to climate change. This would lead to the loss and extinction of species on which we depend.
“Climate Change is a global challenge that affects not only economic, but also social and cultural well being of our planet without respecting boundaries. Indeed, science has shown that we are surpassing a 10C average global temperature rise above pre-industrial era as a result of greenhouse gas emissions due to human activities. Consequently, there is need for collective global action to address climate change challenges” said the CAS.
