The Ministry of Environment and Forestry is mandated to protect, conserve and manage the
environment and natural resources for socio-economic development. Waste Management is a
major challenge in Kenya posing danger to human health and the environment as well as littering
highways and urban centers. The Constitution of Kenya 2010 clarified the roles of waste management for both National and County Governments.
The Ministry of Environment and Forestry has developed 3 crucial documents to guide waste
management in Kenya. These are:-
1. National Sustainable Waste Management Policy
2. National Sustainable Waste Management Bill
3. E-Waste Strategy.
These draft documents have undergone stakeholder consultations countrywide. The documents
prescribe measures to be undertaken to ensure the country’s transition into circular economy and
zero waste status. This will be done through minimized waste generation, separation at source,
enhanced waste collection, reusing waste, recycling, and disposal of unusable waste to secure
sanitary landfills. The documents also prescribe waste governance and delineation of roles from
National, County and local level.
These documents can be downloaded at the Ministry’s website www.environment.go.ke.
Towards finalization of these draft documents, the Ministry has organized a National Validation
workshop to be held at Kenyatta International Conference Centre on 24th May 2019 at 9.00am.
Members of the public, county governments, civil society organizations, non-governmental
organizations, professional bodies, persons with disabilities, faith based organizations, women,
youth and all other stakeholders are called upon to participate in the validation meeting…….read more
