NATIONAL WASTE BILL AND POLICY VALIDATED

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry will ensure a sustained environmental awareness among members of the public to ensure a sustained awareness creation on Environmental issues, especially waste management.

Speaking when he presided over the National validation workshop for the waste management Bill, Policy and E-Waste strategy at the Kenyatta International Convention Center, Nairobi, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Dr. Ibrahim Mohamed observed that, the three documents are guided by the circular economy; a principle which is a radical departure from the current practice where nobody wants to touch waste once generated, but is transferred to dumpsites.

The Principal Secretary, who represented the Cabinet Secretary, Mr. Keriako Tobiko noted that, in the circular economy dispensation, every citizen, corporate, county government and national government will have a role to play that are clearly documented in the waste policy and bill, noting that, the policy recommends for the establishment of an inclusive waste management council to guide the development of the national waste management plan and review progress towards its implementation. Membership to this Council will be drawn from diverse key institutions including Counties and will be chaired by the Cabinet Secretary in charge of environmental matters.

The Principal Secretary reiterate the commitment of the national Government in ensuring Kenyans enjoy a clean and healthy environment as enshrined in the Constitution, and  urged every policy development player to play their roles and ensure that supportive legislative tools are in place as soon as possible.

The new law and policy is expected to be in place by December 2019.
