REPLICATE ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION PROJECTS COUNTRYWIDE – PS MOHAMED
Environment and Forestry Principal Secretary Dr. Ibrahim Mohamed with officials from Global Environment Facility( GEF) International Fund for Agricultural Development ( IFAD) and the ministry during the briefing session at the ministry headquarters.
Environment and Forestry Principal Secretary Dr Ibrahim Mohamed has said the government is keen on partnering with development partners in implementing environmental conservation projects .
The PS has said the environment is under constant threats from degradation activities and high population growth which are exerting pressure on the ecosystems , and it will take concerted efforts between the government and development partners to restore.
The PS spoke today when he was briefed by officials from Global Environment Facility( GEF) IFAD and Government of Kenya mission to Upper Tana – Nairobi Water Fund ahead of a field visit to Muranga and Nyeri counties where they are implementing projects on environmental conservation.
Dr. Mohammed called on GEF to replicate the environmental projects they are undertaking in the maned counties to other parts of the country.
The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is implementing projects on behalf of International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) under GEF which focuses on four thematic areas climate change, protecting land and water, provide food and water sustainably and build healthy cities.
The five year project which started in 2016 aims to attain a well-conserved catchment with improved water quality and quantity for downstream users.
The project also aims at maintaining regular flows of water; enhancing ecosystem services including food security, freshwater and terrestrial biodiversity, and improving human well-being and quality of life for upstream local communities.
The project has seen 50% reduction in sediment concentration in rivers, while 500,000 trees are planted every year and 196,000 acres of land are under sustainable management.
Ministry of Environment and Forestry Director for programs and projects Agnes Yobterik said that the partnership between GEF IFAD and the government will see the project upscaled to Eldoret and Mombasa counties.
She called on those implementing the projects to ensure the funds utilized for the intended purpose.
