Kenya Launches Cherangany Forest Ecosystem Restoration Project to Boost Climate Resilience and Sustainable Livelihoods
In a bold step towards climate resilience, environmental sustainability, and improved livelihoods, Kenya has launched the Cherangany Forest Ecosystem Restoration Project a transformative initiative set to reshape the future of one of the country’s most critical water towers.
Presiding over the launch, Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, Dr. Deborah Barasa applauded the Government of Italy and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation for financing the project and commended the Ministry, through the National Environment Trust Fund (NETFUND), for spearheading its implementation.
“This project is timely. Its expected outcome including the ambitious target of growing 15 billion trees, restoring degraded forest areas, improving land management, enhancing local livelihoods, and strengthening climate resilience will significantly contribute to our national strategies and plans.” stated the CS
The CS expressed deep concern over the growing threats posed by human activities and the impacts of climate change, which continues to endanger biodiversity and jeopardizing the livelihoods of forest-dependent communities. She highlighted the project’s focus on community empowerment, sustainable livelihood enhancement, and ecosystem restoration as essential pillars for long-term success.
The CS reaffirmed the Ministry’s full support for the project and reiterated the Government’s unwavering commitment to achieving a sustainable and climate-resilient future.
The launch was attended by key dignitaries, including Principal Secretaries Dr. Eng. Festus K. Ng’eno (Environment and Climate Change) and Harsama Kello (ASALs and Regional Development), Governors Wisley Rotich (Elgeyo Marakwet) and Simon Kachapin (West Pokot), and the Italian Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Dr. Roberto Natali, among others.
The Cherangany Forest Ecosystem Restoration Project marks a critical milestone in Kenya’s environmental journey, positioning the country as a leader in ecosystem restoration and inclusive climate action. As the nation works towards restoring its natural heritage, this initiative offers a beacon of hope for both people and planet.
